When we were there:
Mid July (low season)
Where we stayed:
CL Dreams Homestay This little place had great reviews on booking.com and for only $18AUD/night with AC we were pleasantly surprised with the room. The family who hosted us were so helpful and really made our time in Fort Kochi a wonderful experience. The homestay isn’t in the heart of Fort Kochi but only a 5 min (30IDR) tuk tuk ride away. We would highly recommend this little place to anyone looking for affordable accommodation with a private bathroom and AC.
Where we ate:
Kashi Art Cafe: This was one of our favourite spots in Fort Kochi mainly due to its lovely atmosphere. Try the Vege burgers and the pancakes! They also have nice french press coffee if you’re looking for a nice coffee for breakfast.
Qissa Cafe: This cafe is another great place to chill out and have breakfast. We shared a French press and had the pancakes! 🙂
Pizza Italia: As you can probably see, we were straying away from the curries at this stage. We ended up here for dinner one night- the place was packed, and we shared a pizza which was really good!
Stuff we did:
There is not a great deal to do in Fort Kochi, but it was still a good little place to chill for a couple of days if you fly into or out of Cochin Airport.
The Chinese fishing nets are a sight to see. They are massive contraptions that take about 6 men to lower into, and out of the water. Don’t forget to check out “the catch” after they have pulled the net out… we were lucky enough to see a haul of half a bucket – made up of flip-flops, plastic bags, reeds and a few little tiddlers no bigger than Nemo 😛
It easy to get a bus from Fort Kochi. Its a nice air-conditioned bus for 70 IDR/person (bus no. 603 from memory) just as quick as a taxi.
Princes St has some nice little places to buy clothes and other gifts if you feel like doing some shopping. We bought some nice cotton dresses and silk gypsy travel pants.
What we thought:
If you’re going to be flying into Kochin airport, Fort Kochi is a nice place to spend a day or two to start or end your trip to India.
